School Journeys is run by Susan Sabey, a parent with children at local schools. Susan has a professional background in planning and market research and also a specific expertise in online facilities to support school-run planning, and has helped schools solve the increasing problems of congestion and regulatory requirements. For the past five years, School Journeys have worked closely with schools in Hampstead, Camden, Barnet and Hammersmith to reduce school run traffic, by running online research into traffic habits, writing school transport plans, by running an online car share database, and school bus route planning. School Journeys is a trading name owned by Webwanderer Ltd.
The School Journey Share facility is an online database that enables you to find and contact other local parents with children at the same, or nearby, schools as you, so that you can arrange to share the school run. Parents who drive, walk, or use public transport to take their children to school can use the facility for free, providing their school is participating in the scheme.
To use the Journey Share facility, you must enter the ID number and password allocated by your child’s school. Once this has been checked by the system to verify your identity, your email address will become your login and you can choose your own password (your new password must contain numbers and letters and be at least 6 characters long).
Once you have access to the Journey Share facility you can register details of your child’s school, your home postcode, and your journey requirements.
The system will automatically find other local parents with children at the same school(s) as you. You can also choose whether you want to search for journey share partners from other nearby schools.
You can then make contact with any matches you choose, through a secure e-mail, and arrange to meet them to discuss sharing responsibility for the school run.
If you find a journey share and no longer want to be visible on the system, you can go to 'Ajust my general settings' and click 'hide' under 'Visibility on the system'.
Once you find a parent you think you might like to share with, you can make contact using the secure email system. Your e-mail will be sent to them, and they can email you back, or telephone you if you include your phone number in the message. We suggest you meet in person before finalising anything.
School Journeys has considerable experience developing travel plans, and understand the complexity of the situation facing schools and their requirements. We initially work with a small central group to plan workable initiatives. We then focus on helping schools to build consensus and support from their key audiences (e.g. parents, staff, Local Council). We also ensure that each plan is suited to the individual school which makes it more likely to be supported and for the school to reach its target.
Planning by geographic segment: Our post-code technology and planning models, enable schools to divide up their geographic catchment area quickly and easily. Initiatives can then be based on the travel patterns of each geographic segment. This enables plans to be far more realistic and achievable than previously.
DfES Compliant: Our plans conform to the standards outlined by the Department for Education and Skills at any level (1-3) determined by the school. In cases where planning permission is sought we provide Level 3 plan for section 106 requirements.
Ongoing Monitoring: Schools can use our online facilities, coupled with hands-up surveys where appropriate (collated by us) to conduct the DfES-required monitoring twice yearly.
Yearly Updates: In addition to the full revision required every three years for your School Travel Plan, we also provide Yearly Update Plans and interim reports, showing your school’s progress with regards to SMART targets.
In addition, we aim to identify suitable local engineering works that could be implemented under Safer Routes to School.
We currently provide online research facilities to a number of schools. We are able to provide a facility so that all of the pupils, parents and staff in your school can complete their travel surveys online.
Secure and Confidential: No personal data is included in the surveys, as each child is given an ID number. These ID numbers are also compatible with the Journey Share program, should a school wish to use this service as well.
Cost-effective: Our results are cheaper and more efficient than other forms of survey collection given the paper, data entry and time required for each school to run them individually.
Automatic collation of results: We can provide pre-agreed comparable, numerical and graphical survey results, best suited to meet your needs.
Rapid data collection: We can survey teachers, pupils, and staff easily and quickly.
Customised surveys to reflect Individual Schools and Age Groups: In our experience each school requires some customisation e.g. in terms of the ages of children attending, travel issues etc. We customise the surveys for each school (one each for parents, pupils and staff).
Easy accessibility of surveys: Surveys can be accessed through www.schooljourneys.co.uk or through schools’ individual websites. All surveys are password protected, to ensure that pupils select the correct survey when presented with a list of schools.
Instructions for teachers and/or parents: We provide schools with an instruction sheet for teachers, explaining how to help pupils complete the survey. With very young children, it may be appropriate for parents to help their child complete the survey, and we provide schools with a letter to send to parents with instructions on how to complete the survey. Instructions are also provided for teachers and parents when surveys are required from them. We can provide translations of these as necessary.
Data Entry for paper surveys available: Where pupils or parents do not have Internet access at home, they can either use school facilities or we will provide a paper survey. We can then arrange for this data to be entered into the online survey version, so that all survey results are online. Alternatively we complete the survey by telephone.
Help-line for Schools: Despite the fact that the software is some of the easiest to use available, there are always a very few (usually about 4 per school) who have difficulty. We provide a telephone help-line to assist with this.
